Duty Calls

Back in January my mailbox greeted me with the official "Summons To Jury Duty." I responded with immediate dismay, knowing that my life was about to be interrupted by the justice system. I realize that serving as a juror is an important responsibility and a privilege, but “please God, don’t let them pick me!” Well, my two weeks of service began today. I had to be at the courthouse at 8:45 am for the jury selection process. I prepared for the long haul by packing my oversized purse with crackers, water, and reading material. I sat in the "pool" along with the other “lucky contestants” with my nose in my book and my ear anxiously awaiting my name to be called. After three hours of waiting, the long-awaited announcement came... “Those remaining can go home.” Whether or not I have to report tomorrow depends on an automated message that I have to call in to hear after 5:30 pm today.

One day down, eight to go.
