Are you backed up?

Speaking of Family Photos
Digital Photography School is doing a great series right now about "Backing Up and Saving Your Images." I know this is especially important for professional photographers, but, trust me, I don't think any Mom out there would be too thrilled if her computer crashed and all those treasured photos of her babies were gone forever! In fact, I think she might even panic, run around her apartment frantically, and lose all self control. How do I know? This almost happened to me a while back. I didn't update my virus protection the moment it expired, and within 24 hours my computer had a virus! I freaked out. I cried. I panicked. I ran around the apartment talking to inanimate objects as if I had the ability to damage them with my words just as they had damaged me with their malfunctions. The very thought of losing all--ALL--of Silas' baby pictures literally threw me into hysteria. Are you all worked up just thinking about it? Sorry. The good news is that with the help of a friend, I was able to resolve the virus issue and get things up and running again without losing any data, but it was a close call, friends. I immediately put all my photos onto Kevin's computer, but I knew I needed another backup option as well. So early this week that I finally got around to buying an external hard drive to back up all of our family photos. Yay! And I figure while I'm at it, I'll start doing some photo organizing as well. Simple Mom did a great post a couple of years ago called "A Declutterer’s Guide to Storing Photos." I really like her system. I have a lot of back work to do though. But baby step by baby step I'm determined to get the job done!
